I used to say, “you can’t outrun your fork.”

I was wrong.
-
You can absolutely do enough cardio to create a calorie deficit and lose fat without paying much attention to your nutrition.
-
But.
-
1️⃣If you’re eating like an asshole and throttling a mega fuck ton of calories down your face hole every meal...you’re gonna have to do an outrageous amount of cardio.
-
Not 30 minutes on the elliptical.
-
Hours.
-
Hours upon hours upon hours of mind-numbing cardio to burn as many calories as possible.
-
Which, between you and me, sounds worse than getting repeatedly punched in the penis by a herd of Hippogriffs.
-
2️⃣Which makes it outrageously difficult to sustain long-term.
-
3️⃣Not to mention, it creates a terrible mental & emotional relationship with food & exercise. Because you’re essentially using exercise as a punishment to try and “undo” all the “damage” you did by eating too much.

And if you’re using exercise as a punishment and viewing eating too much as “doing damage,” you’re about to have a hellishly awful fitness experience.
-
4️⃣And if you’re spending all that time doing endless amounts of cardio, you probably won’t have much time or energy to strength train.
-
And while some cardio is wicked important and tremendously beneficial for many reasons, so is lifting heavy weights. And doing some of both is better than either alone.

So.

Moral of the story?
-
1) Don’t use cardio as your primary means of creating a calorie deficit. Nutrition is king for fat loss.

2) Don’t put yourself in a situation that puts you in danger of getting repeatedly punched in the dongle by a herd of Hippogriffs.

HIIT workouts are one of my favourite ways to train. They are short, sweet and to the point whilst challenging yourself to push through 10-20 minutes of intense overload. While they are certainly not for the faint of heart, they definitely can be part of a great training program as they not only develop the anaerobic system, but also have aerobic benefits as well
.
They burn a ton of calories, preserve muscle mass, and can be done anywhere anytime. Generally, I like a work:rest ratio of either 1:1 or 1:0.5 (really extreme, but gets the job done). What ratio someone uses strongly depends on their time, goals, and fitness level. I highly suggest a ratio of 1:2 or more for beginners to allow for ample rest and play with the ratios as they see fit to their fitness level and progress

Let me tell you, falling short of your goals for whatever reason is a bloody bitter pill to swallow. It’s common for us to think our self worth is based on achievement. This year was far from what I had worked for with many unfortunate events that were out of my control. I’ve realised that this doesn’t make me any less important as an athlete or a person. Your success or failures don’t define who you are. If you’re in the same boat as me, let’s have the courage to get back up and continue chasing what it is we want #happyfeet 💗.
