There was a strange shake-up in the world of #foodphotography this week. A popular teacher spoke out against a former student, claiming her work was a "copy".
Well, of course it fucking was.
Do you know why? BECAUSE CREATIVITY SPRINGS FROM IMITATION. And learning your own style starts with mimicking other styles you admire.
THAT IS HOW HUMANS LEARN.
Great teachers KNOW that copying is a HUGE part of learning and growing.
JUST ASK BOB ROSS. Did HE ever complain about how many people copied his work? No. He kept putting out tutorials, so others could embrace the joy he felt by creating art.
Any teacher who shows you her way, then turns around and shames you for copying her way should not be teaching. This is not what a mentor does or how a true leader behaves.
And I am so sorry if any of you worried for even a second that you may have done something wrong by being INSPIRED to CREATE YOUR OWN WORK after seeing what some other artist had created.
(As a gentle reminder, it's always a great idea to thank those who inspire you. Not mandatory, but classy.)
HERE'S THE THING:
We have too many reasons to not create. We have too much shame already, keeping us from play and trying on new ideas and learning.
Please, whatever you do, do not be dissuaded.
CREATE. Please CREATE.
Try on styles. Copy. Mimic. MAKE.
It's the best and fastest way to learn YOUR STYLE. Imitate away & don't be ashamed to do what it takes to learn.
I believe in this so fully, here's what I am going to do...
I AM GIVING YOU *COMPLETELY #FREE * ACCESS to my 90-Minute Food Photography course.

"Imitation is not just the sincerest form of flattery - it's the sincerest form of learning." George Bernard Shaw ...
