Alan J. Adler is one of my heroes. Ever since I read an article in Scientific American on the Aerobie flying ring, the object that can be thrown over a distance of more than 400m I have been fascinated by his inventions. Studying patent literature I noticed a very old patent by him on a climbing toy. I had never seen it in a shop nor found any documents on the internet. So I sent him an e-mail. I was really amazed when he replied and told me the product had only limited play value and had never made it to the shops. But I, he said, could make one myself. I printed the patent document and discussed the design with a friend on my daily train. He looked at the drawings and offered to make one. A week later we met again and he showed me a few he had made in his spare time. Some for his grand children. Excellent! The idea is simple: two different diameter bobbins. Pull on the lower cord and the toy will climb upwards. Such fun. I showed to my colleagues (mechanical engineers). At first they did not understand how it functioned. So simple, there should be other uses ....
