Olha quem apareceu por aqui!! Hahahahha!
Aí vem a defesa!
Hahahhaha!
.
😘.

When one of your favorite humans pops into your museum and your twin game is on-point and aggressively scientific..⁣

Haven’t listened to #ologies #podcast ? Do yourself a favor and add some academic flavor to your synapses. ⁣

Also check out @wrong.whale ‘s episode on everything #corals ( #cnidariology w/ Shayle Matsuda) - you’ll learn much more than you might expect. ⁣

Thankful for the amazing and influential friends in my life that are making this world a better and brighter place to live in and also your podcasts @alieward ( @ologies ) giving us researchers the stage for us to speak up, express ourselves, and share our research beyond our own academic bubbles: keep 👏🏽 it 👏🏽 up 👏🏽.⁣

I am SO in love with how this whipped back stitch came out for this bacteria! Do you know what kind it is?

There are actually three main shapes for bacteria: spiral (shown here!), cocci (spherical), and bacilli (rod shaped).
This bacteria pattern sampler will have them ALL!

I have stitched up this hoop in two different color ways and I'm really excited to show you the FiNiShEd product! I'm thinking of also making kits? I feel like it would be really fun to have some color and also learn 12 new stitches. I better get to work on those IGTV tutorials 😅

On Friday I successfully defended my PhD and I thought this was one of the best pictures to post with this announcement. My advisor, Dr. Astrid Schnetzer, has guided me each step of the way and has been a great mentor. Some people are tired of their thesis by time they get to the end, but I can honestly say that plankton are just as thrilling now as they were at day 1. I am excited to continue to work in plankton and see what the future holds!

Maiasaura Monday! This is a replica skeleton of a baby Maiasaura, a type of duckbill dinosaur that lived in North America ~77 million years ago. 🐣 Maiasaura wins the title of state fossil of Montana! ⁣
⁣
Now, I have some questions for all of you! Would you be interested in becoming patron if I started a Patreon account? I absolutely love sharing my life as a paleontologist with you all, & I am so grateful for your support. I also can recognize that I am burning out. I work full-time as a paleontology collections manager/registrar, and I do my #scicomm work on my own time. I’m proud of the content I post here, and it takes a lot of work. Everything I make is original creative content, no reposts. Photos are taken by me, or directed by me (thank you @thegreaterthomson 😘). I research every topic and try to write my posts in an approachable, informative and passionate manner. I value scientific integrity, humor, citing relevant work, diversity, and inclusivity. ⁣
⁣
I also value self compassion and work-life balance. That’s getting harder to achieve while doing all my social media work for free. I don’t do sponsorships. You’re not going to see ads on my page. That comes at a cost that I am struggling to maintain. So, I am thinking of joining Patreon to help subsidize the time & energy I put into my science communication posts and I want to know what you all think. If you were a patron, what benefits would you like to see offered? I’m thinking of providing more posts with even more information just for patrons, or maybe a Q&A community board, and/or shoutouts in my posts to patrons, maybe some behind-the-scenes videos? I really want to know what benefits you would enjoy the most and what could offer the most insights into my life as a paleontologist. ⁣
⁣
Let me know what you think in a comment! ⁣
⁣
📍Maiasaura was discovered on the ancestral homelands of the Niitsítpiis-stahkoii, Očeti Šakówiŋ & Ktunaxa peoples. ⁣

Check out this super cool moth! 🤩 This moth is called the Green-patched looper AKA the Hologram moth (Diachrysia balluca)! ⭐️ The scales on the forewing of this moth are VERY reflective, which gives it this really gorgeous glossy appearance! Although not considered uncommon, I’m always excited when we get one to the moth sheet! 😍
•
You’ll also notice this moth has a few “tufts” sticking directly upwards from his wings... this is a pretty common characteristic among looper moths and can be used to distinguish similar-looking species apart from one another!
•
Ps. who’s calling in the background? 😎🐸

#Mitochondria are commonly known as the powerhouse of the cell because they are responsible for converting oxygen to energy! ...but did you know that these organelles also have their own DNA? 🧬

The DNA we typically think of, which is found inside a cell's nucleus, comes from both parents 👨‍👩‍👧 But mitochondrial DNA (#mtDNA), which is found inside the mitochondria, is primarily inherited from our mothers👩‍👧🚫👨‍👧! How and why our father's mtDNA is eliminated isn't fully understood. It has been hypothesized 🤔 that most of the mitochondria in sperm are localized to the tail & never make it inside the egg, or if they do they're undetectable because they're greatly outnumbered by maternal mtDNA or somehow degraded. Some studies have shown that in rare instances we can inherit paternal mtDNA, but these events are usually implicated in disease.

Fun fact: our mtDNA is what services like @23andme use to trace our maternal ancestries! 👩‍👧➡️👩‍👩‍👧➡️👩‍👩‍👧‍👧 Let's learn from each other ✨

Photo-story: Are carrots on the menu this Christmas? There’s around 13 million carrots in this field and Rothamsted PhD student Hannah McGrath ( @hanzii93 ) has sown custom wildflower strips right through the middle of them! These wildflower combinations are designed to attract the most beneficial insects right into the crop. By working with commercial growers, we can design seed mixes that work in practice, not just in theory. With everyone's creative contributions, together we wrote a song! This was my first time facilitating a workshop in Japan and I feel so elated with this musical ecology process. When we playfully consider the connection between us and our urban ecology, together we can write music and lyrics... Not to mention have a lot of fun whilst we're at it! - #antioxidant in #redwine -

#Italians LOVE #wine. #Italy ranks first in the top 15 wine-producing and third in the top 15 wine-consuming countries.

In 1995, Frankel and collaborators demonstrated that antioxidants and #phenolic #compound present in wine contribute to keeping low the level of low-density lipoproteins (LDL). #LDL is often called “bad #cholesterol” and is the main responsible for #atherosclerosis and #coronaryheartdisease.

Thus, a moderate consumption of wine can have some #beneficial effect on #human #health.

Antioxidants content, phenols and #bitterness are only some of the features that determine wine #quality. My friend @io.nospheric and collaborators published a paper in which they used an #etongue to simultaneously determine all these three features.

E-tongue (short for #electronic tongue) is an instrument that works like a tongue: it measures #tastes.

The researchers analyzed three types of red wine produced in #SouthTyrol (Italy): #Lagrein, @magdalener.wine and #Vernatsch.
To validate the results obtained with the e-tongue, they measured the antioxidant activity and the phenolic content with traditional #chemical methods and the bitterness was evaluated by a panel of 12 #experts.

Traditional chemical methods are #expensive, time-consuming and require the use of dangerous chemical compounds. The results obtained with the e-tongue overlap the ones obtained with traditional methods.

Moreover, the evaluation of the 12 expert panelists correlated with the analysis obtained with the e-tongue.

To conclude, e-tongue is simple to use, fast (only 20 seconds per wine sample), reliable, sensitive and cheap.

It can become the new standard for #qualitycontrol analysis in #wineries.
