🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿STIRLING CASTLE🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Although Edinburgh Castle is the more popular castle in Scotland, I definitely prefer Stirling Castle. Not only is the tour absolutely fantastic but the place is just steeped in so much history. You can also get access to every nook & cranny, something I’m always disappointed with at Edinburgh Castle; although understandable when it is used for so many commercial events throughout the year. Which do you prefer? 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 #stirlingcastle #stirling #historicscotland #robertthebruce #scotland #scottishcastle #scotlandtravel #scotlandshistory #scotlandexplore #explorescotland #scotland_lover #scotland_insta #scotlandlover #scotlandlove #scotlandisnow #unlimitedscotland #scottish #ourscottishlife #instascotland #instascot #picoftheday.

What do you think – is this the perfect window into a peaceful monastic life at Glenluce Abbey? 🙏
•
The abbey was founded by Roland Lord of Galloway in 1191/2. It was a strategic move for the Lord, forming part of his plans for the semi-independent lands of Galloway.
•
Despite its calming setting, things weren’t always peaceful here…
•
The abbey was associated with the Galloway rebellion of 1235 against Alexander II. Abbot Robert was deprived in the aftermath. He was replaced by the Prior of Melrose.
•
Then, from around 1500, the community suffered from a series of extended disputes over rival claims to the abbacy or commendatorship.
•
In 1545-6, it was invaded by the Earl of Cassilis and Gordon of Lochinvar, who were attempting to impose their own claims on the abbey. In 1560, Gordon of Lochinvar was back. (presumably the same bloke?) He expelled the monks who had taken up monastic life here.
•
The abbey did have it’s peaceful moments, and was very much at the heart of country life. It depended heavily on sheep farming, and developed close trading links with both Ireland and the continent. 🐑
•
This countryside setting was revered much later. In the 19th century, the abbey became subject of a number of paintings, showing idyllic country life.
•
Huge thanks to @myinstascotland for permission to share this beauty. 🙌

🏰 The medieval Dunnottar Castle, Scotland •
•

Dunnottar Castle is a ruined medieval fortress located upon a rocky headland on the northeastern coast of Scotland, about 2 miles south of Stonehaven.
The surviving buildings are largely of the 15th and 16th centuries, but the site is believed to have been fortified in the Early Middle Ages.

Dean Village, only a short walk from the city centre is a true gem. The architecture here is just fabolous and we loved it. 💛
It is right by the Water of Leith walkway, which is a really nice walk if you have enough time.👣 The village used to be a successful grain milling area for more than 800 years. Today it is a peaceful part of Edinburgh and really worth the visit. 🌾
Have you been to Edinburgh yet and if so, what impressed you the most? ✨.
