These geckos made our last breakfast in Maui rather entertaining. They were polite and made sure to not hop on the table or our plates. They kept their distance and gazed at us from the railing. I couldn't tell if they were just curious about us or were actually trying to beg for food.
These gold dust geckos are native to Madagascar and small islands off the coast of East Africa. Their markings have the Mardis Gras vibe. Rather than arriving as stowaways on ships and such, the entire population in Hawaii originates from eight geckos that were released by an U of Hawaii student in 1974. They became widespread in the 90's. Their impact is unclear. But their beauty cannot be argued.
