Stir the pot w/ pallof press deceleration. This is a challenging rotary stability (resisting rotation) movement that I like for some of my more advanced athletes. The goal is to keep the hips and lumbar spine still while moving the cable out and around quickly, and then suddenly stopping it as it tries to pull you towards the machine. It’s always interesting to look back at old videos and see what’s changed, what hasn’t, and what I should try to get back to. This video is from 2016. A few things I did well: late intent-I was relatively smooth and relaxed until my foot hit the ground, my shoulders rotated well on that Ferris wheel type axis, and my arm action was relatively loose. While I don’t think it is always a huge deal, I did have an elevated distal humerus here- my elbow got above my shoulder prior to my arm flipping up-I have corrected that. Step-behind bounce drop lateral bound. I like this as an advanced frontal plane power movement, and as the second part of a post activation potentiation (PAP) pairing. Stationary roll-ins. I like this drill because it puts me in a position to work on hip/shoulder separation without a huge walk-up and added momentum. I would use this variation as athletes get closer to the season since it likely has better transfer to the mound due to the reduced ability to create extra momentum. Got up to 91 with a 4oz, but the drill felt pretty awkward, so the numbers were promising. Maximal strength is important in athletic development, but chasing it forever will lead to a point of diminishing returns. If power is your next focus technology can be very helpful in terms of monitoring bar speed and fatigue. Pick a goal bar speed range and when you drop below that, you’re done. This not only helps with fatigue management, but also with intent since you have a goal to hit each rep. If you don’t have access to a tendo unit or some other type of accelerometer, percentages are the next best option. Generally the range to use is 55-85%, but 70-80% seems to be the sweet spot according to Dr. Fred Hatfield’s findings. • • Interested in individualized training?
